Thats great lads, what i dont have is a crank locking bolt, have a spare belt, and i have looked at all the lessons on line, but theres nothing like getting your hands dirty. Looking at the forcast on the BBC tonight and the weather looks good for next weekend

Yes you can do it without, but inadvisable to teach that approach in my view. I recall two youtube videos a few years ago covering the topic, one showed the mark on the lower pulley pointing upwards and the other pointing downwards. It was explained by a knowledgeable member that whilst the engine would run with belt fitted in either pulley position, one way made it considerably harder to start.

Yes. You can see how hard mine was to start.

It's a doddle once you know what you're doing, you don't need to make it complicated. Line it up, bung the belt on, leave.

MT DECKY, some other things you may wish to think about
The 4 bolts securing the cambelt cover aren't all the same length Your starter motor may not work and may chew up a bolt trying to start the engine if bolts are incorrectly fitted

There is a small drain hole at the bottom of the cover plate You should ensure that this is not blocked A simple task when fitted on the bike if you know where to look When the plate is off you can easily find it Some owners have struggled to locate this when fitted on the bike

You may wish to take the opportunity to wipe dirt/ belt dust off the engine and inside of the cover plate

There is a rubber O-ring that fits into a slot on the engine It doesn't provide a total seal You may find that yours is compressed and needs to be renewed

Take the opportunity to inspect pulleys for wear If you notice that a new belt isn't fully seated, you might put a new pulley on your To Do list

Some will say these details are not worth considering, adopting the Break it n Fix it approach Preventative maintenance is boring but having to limp home or wait for a recovery truck is probably even more frustrating

Tanx for all the advice lads, i want to learn how to do all these small jobs its better then sitting on the side of the road thinking i should have done that job before i left, anyway there will be none of that this weekend, lol
