My twincam Austin A30 engine...

Post by Yoof » Sun Jun 14, 2015 8:31 pm

Thought some of you lot would be interested in the engine im building for my 1956 Austin A30.
Its a 1275cc morris ital engine with a cylinder head from a BMW K100 motorcycle.
I am by no means the first do do this as there it a company that specialize in the conversion kits. Very popular with the classic minis.
I am hoping to get around 110bhp which should be good fun in a little Austin!
big difference from a 803cc 29bhp!

So I started by drilling, tapping and then blocking all of the original stud/water/pushrod holes in the block.

The block was then machined flat on a lumsden surface grinder.
Then using a milling machine we drilled and tapped the new holes for the bmw head.
3 of the original stud holes actually stay put as they match the bmw head!

The head needed modification as well as the bmw was cam chain driven but with this application it will be belt drive
Image

The block has also been re bored to 1st over size and some nice mini pistons fitted with the valve cut outs machined

Just started building the engine as a dry build to make sure it will all work.

This is all the nice shiney bits you get in the kit.

And a very nice exhaust manifold which unfortunately will have to be modified to fit my rear wheel dive Austin as its designed for the transverse minis.

Anyway its been a fun project so far!
Shame the car isnt as sorted...

Nick that looks impressive. Are you going to have to modify the engine bay/ bonnet to fit it in?

I used to have a K1100 which a couple of mini owners approached me about, wanting to buy it for their conversion

The engine bay will not need modifying as it's still an a series block and there is plenty of space in there.
Its going to have a ford type 9 gearbox with a bellhousing conversation so most of the trans tunnel will have to be removed and reamade. Midget diff and half shafts. Midget discs on front.

Very impressive!

It makes me wonder about my Morris 1000...... Unfortunately (like your Austin) I should really get the bodywork perfect first.
