Having ridden big Harleys since the age of 19 in 1983 I grew accustomed to people coming up to me talking about my bikes. Now times are harder and I have a family my days of riding expensive bikes are gone. I bought my MT 500 2 years ago and am enjoying riding more than ever.
Gone are the hours of cleaning and polishing, also worrying about the weather and where to park my bike.
My MT has set me free to ride carefree nearly every day.
Only criticism is the range of the tank, becoming an expert on "Pay at pump" at Tescos filling up without even getting off the bike.
Another thing about the bike is just as many people come up to me asking about my MT as my big Hogs, strange really, plus I don't get the anti Harley brigade telling me how much they hate them.
As you can tell, love my MT (nearly as much as my Defender) more fun less worries and a lot less money.

Thanks I do have a small canister of around 1 litre on my rack support. Funny really I have just travelled to Manchester and back from Exeter in my car and got 72mpg Getting around 40-50 mpg out the MT!

40-50mpg !, that must make life difficult. I got about 75mpg for an MT350 riding a newly bought bike home from Plymouth. I didn't go over 50mph, which was just as well because when I took the tyres off the tubes were both mega old and the rim tape was more gaffer tape than rubber !

When I went for a new rear tyre found out my rear rim was cracked! Got it alley welded for ÂŁ25! Just posted a picture of my bike on photo blog! I probably ride it too hard to get good MPG.

I don't get as good as Wirralman's 75 mpg, but do get about 65 mpg with the 405 engine. I usually keep the top speed to about 55 mph, with the occasional 60. Pushing it higher will probably bring the mpg down to about 50 mpg.
I know how you feel, as most in the club will. I've also got a Honda Pan European, but the MT is much more fun.

Last summer got my MT up to around 75mph and it blew my left side panel off. Yes they have a habit of doing that when the rubber weakens. The smart guys tether them by drilling a small hole in the underside and then use a zip tie. It doesn't need to be tight, as long as the ends are joined together you won't lose the panel.
