4t Hydraulic Press for Bending 3mm Steel bearing press

I have just been offered a 4t hydraulic bench mounted press at peanuts money and am wondering if its enough to bend small bits of 3mm steel and drive things like the steering head stem out of the yoke.

Anyone with experience?

i've just designed (and had built as I am still broken) a unit to bend 5mm x 16mm steel strap up to 90 degrees. I sits on top of a standard 4inch record (school) vice. wind the vice shut and it bends then metal.

I did it so kids could bend the metal to make a folding seat.

I would think a 4 ton press would be able to do the same.

It should be able to do bearings too.

Although It took 19tons to pop the A frame ball joint out on the 110.

Is it of the type with a bottle jack at the top of the frame? If so they are fantastic, i converted one to swage ferrules with a 30T jack we do 9mm ferrules three a time ! (just remember when it can't go any further STOP or burst seals and a mess to clean up)

If its cheap enough it should make a useful addition to the workshop, although you always find that job where you need just a little more omph!

I got beaten to it unsurprisingly. So elected to go for a 10t C shape version in the end. As has been said, you can never have to much oomph! The one I have been borrowing at the bike shop is 10t and has done everything I have needed to date.

For £180 I can't really complain and I think it will pay for itself over time in being able to bend metal easier than banging the crap out of it with a lump hammer in the vice.......

once you have one in the workshop you will soon be making attachments so you can sheet metal in long lengths.

when im fit again and get to set up my workshop I will be sourcing one too.

Well my toy finally arrived and is already being put to good use. It makes a doddle of removing the steering stem bolt and bearing from the yoke and using a prototype tool that George has made for me it is even easier to put the bearing back on!!

It bends 5mm over a short length with ease. For making MT bits like a side stand mount and battery box for an MT500 its been great!!

Well worth every penny.

A few pictures of the current workspace set up!

I will let you know in a couple of hours! I am just putting it back together at the moment. Just waiting on the stem bolt to arrive.

Looks a nice piece of engineering as ever!!
