hi all.

a couple of members have asked me about manufacturing the rotax tool, valve spring compressor. after borrowing a cylinder head(thanks simon) i have been looking into this, as we probably agree a conventional valve spring compressor is very awkward to use.
after investigating this over the last few weeks i have come up with an alternative.
need a willing volunteer to give it a try. i am confident having tested it numerous times.
apologies to whoever asked me, but i cannot remember who it was.

i will do a full tutorial once tested.

Valve spring compressor


Based on an early 1980’s general motors valve spring compressor, I have now made up this valve spring compressor.
Still a little bit fiddly, but allows hands free operation. With regards to the valve/head set up this is always going to be a tricky operation.
I looked at the proper rotax tooling but this would be quite difficult to manufacture and not really cost affective.

This is a reversible tool, that fits the inlet valves and exhaust valves, easily interchangeable.

Kit contains
Valve spring compressor tool and fittings

Tools required;
13mm spanner
Long nose pliers
5mm Allen key
Soft face hammer
Small screwdriver
Small magnet

Ideally the head should be mounted in a vice (vice bracket available)
The plate bolts on two of the rocker cover fixing holes, plate is marked, one side IN (inlet valves) other side EX (exhaust valves). See pictures.
Plate fits over valves and sits on top of spring tops, plate will only go on one way. Take a bit of time and fit the plate as central as possible to the valve tops.
Wind the M8 bolt down onto the bearing sat on top of the plate, ensure grease is applied to the M8 bolt threads. The two M8 half nuts are locked onto the M8 bolt with a small amount protruding, allowing this section to locate in the bearing. The idea of the bearing is to stop the plate rotating when the M8 bolt is wound down. When contact is made, another approx 9 turns of the M8 bolt is enough to enable valve collets to be removed. If the valves are stuck they may need a gentle tap with a soft face hammer upwards. Valve collets can then be removed using a small screwdriver and a magnet (that is what I use).
Remove tool in reverse procedure, always undo M8 bolt before removing plate from cylinder head...
To reverse mounting plate, remove half nuts from m8 bolt and turn plate over. Refit M8 bolt and half nuts.

I hope I have explained this reasonably well, the pictures probably tell a better story.
I have also tried both inlet and exhaust valves removal/refitting approx 20 times each and do find this quite easy and straight forward, especially after the first couple of times.

Today I have 'road tested' a couple of Georges fine bits of kit..

Firstly the Cylinder head vice bracket.. This made working on the cylinder head a breeze and felt very professional!

Ive removed and fitted a few valves recently and have got it off to a fine art with the conventional tools..

Georges valve spring compressor made this much easier and quicker. Each collet went in first time and stayed where it should.. I put a drop of oil on each collet groove to help them stay in place. The good thing is you can do both valves at the same time which obviously speeds things up..

Superbly simple and easy to use, cheers George.

Now all i need is a crankshaft pusher and puller!

You could even change the valve stem oil seals without taking the head off i reckon!

thanks for the feedback, glad it worked well.

it was designed on a 1980's general motors tool. this you could also change the valve seals with the head in place.
i was asked this question, cant remember who by, it may have been drifter.
